“This is actually one of the most appealing internet sites I have actually ever before found. That is incredibly appealing since of its distinct material and also amazing write-ups.” - Stacey

This is an old revision of the document!

Science Communication and Conspiracy Theorists

Science Communication

  • Science Promotion
  • Science Explaining
    • Examples

A cautionary Tale

Chemtrails

  • The crazy rainbow lady - sprinkling her lawn, sees rainbow, claims it is proof government is putting chemicals in the water - from 2008
    • she made a video about this
    • how do rainbows work?
      • google, get diagrams showing light reflecting in water droplet being refracted - what about the order of the colors - for each angle of light entering, different particular light that is refracted. Each band coming from different drops.
      • Why is light even bending at all?
        • Snell’s law
        • Fermat’s principle - light always takes the path that is the shortest amount of time from one place to another
          • Example of lifeguard - shortest path to get to someone drowning
          • Does this make sense? How does light know
            • Huyens-Fresnel principles - light is lots of waves
            • Why is light slowing down in water?
              • Dr. Don Lincoln - Why does light slow down in water?
                • he says there are a lot of wrong answers on internet. Complicated things over simplified and invents wrong answers
                  • examples:
                    • Atoms absorbing and re-emitting - doesnt explain angles
                  • Correct …. superimposing the waves creates a new wave
                  • Says we have to use Maxwell’s equations. - It doesnt help the average person
                  • New diagram based on Maxwell’s equations.
                  • Then he says there is a real explanation for light slowing down and light splitting into different colors - rate of slow down is different for different wavelengths - real answer is quantum physicists
                    • ”If you think you understand quantum physics, you are lying to yourself”
                    • Richard Feynman, 1983 - Magnets, how do they work?
                      • Journalist asked the question, and Feynman went through different levels
                      • Eventually realized journalized wouldn’t understand, said
                        • “I’m not going to be able to give an answer, … except to tell you that they do.”

So do I understand Rainbows?

  • quantum physics? No
  • Maxwlls equations - a little
  • Huygens principle - sort of
  • * fermats principle - maybe, but I dont like it
  • Snells law - yes
  • Sunlight on raindrops - reasonable

What this Rainbow Experience Taught ME

  • Leonard Tramiel knows more physics than me
  • Most people will never really understand rainbows
  • Explaing “Whhy…” is a rabbit hole, dont go too deep and get lost!
  • Focu on “what” and “when”, and not “how” and “why”

What to tell the Sprinkler Lady?

  • turn out she was paranoid schizophrenic. She hasn’t posted more videos since 2008
  • Explanations:
    • How a rainbow forms - this is what we know
    • Connect it simply with what she sees in her garden

What to tell conspiracy theorists

  • tailor to the individual
  • Determine your shared reality, your common ground, basic points of science agreed on
  • What did they miss?
    • They might not have noticed they only happen when the sun is behind you
  • Keep it as simple as possible, but no simpler. Leverage existing knowledge
  • Don’t over-explain
    • Rainbow explanation was a great example illustrating this point. You will lose the discussion
  • Show, don’t tell
  • Keep the science at hand, just in case

Related Examples

Chembows

Popular in chemtrails program as evidence of things being sprayed in the air

  • rainless rainbow

Halos and arcs

  • common ground = rainbows need rain
  • missing. = hallows
    • made from ice clouds - needs to be the right kind of crystal
    • contrails are ice clouds
    • around the sun, not opposite
    • happen when facing the sun
  • show them where it fits
    • IT is not something new that needs chemtrails to explain it
  • don’t over-explain
    • get them to observation
    • maybe later you can explain why halos happen

atoptics.co.uk/halo

Oily Chembows

More swear colors, like oil on pavement

Described as “insane oily” “spill” looking type clouds in the sky

Rainbows three ways

  • refraction
  • diffractions - oil clouds, and
  • interference - colors on oil on oil slick

Diffraction is not interference (or is it?)

Woodcut from 1500’s

  • sundogs - sideways halos next to the sun
  • drawing of halos and Coronas
  • these things have been seen for thousands of years - Aristotle in his book on meteorology
  • These things have existed for a long time - this effective technique, especially for chem trail people
  • books on clouds and weather - descriptions match what they are seeing and calling contrails.

Show them its not new

showing them it is real, is a part of the journey - its not near
