“This is actually one of the most appealing internet sites I have actually ever before found. That is incredibly appealing since of its distinct material and also amazing write-ups.” - Stacey

What Is The Mission?

Don’t let writing a cool piece of software distract you from what you set out to do

I was briefly considering writing a brand new wiki software for my sites. Yes I know, just what the world needs, yet another wiki software. #NotNeeds. I have already written several, heavily modded a couple that I had source code to, and played with dozens of others. I have to remind myself: What is my goal? To get all my stuff out online in a place I control (unlike having all my content at the mercy of FaceBook), or spend all my time tinkering with my new platform, and having fun using that to deeply learn the latest Microsoft technologies, and get distracted from my original mission, which is to get my content online somewhere other than just Facebook?

I was watching a guys “program along side me” streaming video about his process of building a wiki on .NET Core, and I was considering using his software. I was considering watching his videos from the start, before checking out his code base. Maybe even contribute changes back to it, he has a well organized list of issues and suggestions of which ones might be easiest for someone starting out with his code base to make a contribution on.

But what I really needed to do was judge if his project was far enough along for his wiki software to be usable to make a dent in getting my content posted online. The online demo of it was extremely disappointing. It seemed like the only thing it could do was post comments.

But it was too painful listening to all his rambling and digressions. Too much like real life.

Listening to him deliberate between “should we do making links between pages, or should we do wiki text”, and listening to another video in his series about building the wiki where all he did was talk with a guest about important cool stuff that has nothing to do with building his wiki, and I could hear George Takei whispering in my ear “Oh No! A wiki that doesn’t even have wiki text! Oh No!”.

I vastly prefer a well written article on how to get something done, than this rambling video blog nonsense people are doing, where they digress to talking about what kind of coffee their wife bought them to drink, and how the wife doesn’t like his video streams, maybe because he doesn’t like to be interrupted while he is making them. Another #TemptationToTheDarkSide. They are all over the place.

Giving it one last chance, I checked out the latest version of his code, clicked run in my IDE, and it wouldn’t even launch, died with an obscure compilation error. Did I mention no, or very few, checkins in the last few months? #Abandonware #NailInTheCoffin
